From 25 February 2026, the UK is enforcing its “permission to travel” checks more strictly. Many non-visa nationals now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the UK, even if they would not normally need to apply for a visit visa.
What is an ETA?
An ETA is a digital travel permission for certain travellers coming to the UK for short stays, including tourism, visiting family, business visits, and some other permitted activities for up to 6 months. An ETA currently costs £16. It does not guarantee entry to the UK.
Who may need one?
Whether you can apply depends on your nationality as shown on your passport. In general, this affects non-visa nationals travelling to the UK without another form of immigration permission. Each traveller needs their own ETA, including babies and children.
Who does not usually need an ETA?
You do not usually need an ETA if you are travelling on a British passport, an Irish passport, or you already have permission to live, work or study in the UK linked to your travel document.
Why this matters
Some travellers assume that if they are “visa-free” they can simply board their flight as before. That is no longer a safe assumption. Carriers are checking permission to travel more strictly, and eligible travellers who do not hold the correct permission may be stopped before boarding.
What to do now
• Check whether your nationality requires an ETA before travel
• Apply using the official UK Government route only
• Make sure you apply using the same passport you will travel with
• Do not leave it until the last minute, even though many decisions are quick
